So aside from its reputation, legacy, importance to Epic Fantasy as a literary form etc, how does the first book in the trilogy hold up, simply as a reading experience?
For the most part, as it turns out, pretty damn well. Not perfect, but still great. Tolkien's prose has a nice flow that keeps the pages turning easily, even throughout the first third or so where the narrative moves at a glacial pace. Somewhere between Tom Bombadill and the arrival of Strider, though, it becomes outright unputdownable, before really hitting its stride at the Council of Elrond where the pieces all fall into place. That aside, it's also a fascinating refresher on perspective, in contrast to how the genre has evolved since, especially in the last ten years or so; aspects like dialogue and characterization have certainly come a long way, iconic figures and forever quotable passages herein notwithstanding.
Looking forward to rediscovering the rest of the trilogy. How old is from the book much more fascinating than the movie itself because of the small details. There’s so many folk tales about forest Before the war, Remember My grandparents used to tell me their experiences when they were going through the woods, It really felt like the woods was alive and Swallowing the sunlight. It is fascinating to hear from someone else with the same experience and made it into a storybook. And I also like the fact that The Hobbit was much more braver and intelligent in this book in comparison with the movie, Something that always bothers me actually was that how will a proper hobbit Lack of experiences when it comes to survival when they constantly have to dodge their predators.
Absolutely worth reading as well highly recommended. I read this for a reading challenge category, “a book you previously abandoned. †The beginning is very dry, but once the story really gets started, it’s more enjoyable. I don’t know how to review a book that has been read, reviewed, and beloved by so many. This book is obviously the predecessor to all modern, epic fantasy, with world-building that is unparalleled. I don’t read or enjoy books from the fantasy genre as much as I used to, so this was a little challenging for me to finish. I recognize that it is a masterpiece in its genre, and it is pretty amazing what Tolkien did with these books. However, I find it to be a tad bit long-winded at times, which I imagine is blasphemy for die-hard fans. One person found this helpful. I read this book at 12 years old. Right after The Hobbit. So many memories its given me. Printing is clear and font is easy to read.
The cover has a matte texture that feels smooth to the touch. I’ve quite enjoyed reading the classic tale in this print version. The beginning of a legendary trilogy, the Lord of the Rings belongs as the top spot for every fantasy fan's best reads for a reason. The tale grew in the telling, as Tolkien put it. The Lord of the Rings began as a sequel to Tolkien's successful children's book, The Hobbit. The early drafts of the story were written in the same lighthearted manner as the Hobbit in a style quite different from the stories of the Elves, posthumously published as the Silmarilion, that Tolkien considered his real life's work. Very soon, however, the tale took on a darker and grander tone. Tolkien's two worlds that briefly touched in the Hobbit, came together to produce the epic tale of the War of the Ring and the end of the Elder Days of the Eldar. The Hobbit is a children's book that adults can enjoy. The Lord of the Rings is the book for those children who enjoyed the Hobbit who are now grown up.
The Elves no longer sit in trees and sing silly songs. They are the Firstborn, ancient beings of great ability and nobility who have their own sorrows. The Dwarves become the noble Khazad, the Naugrim with a fierce loyalty to kin and friends and ever willing to fight for their rights. Gandalf grows from being a cantankerous conjurer to a mighty enemy of Sauron. Bilbo's ring of invisibility, which he used to avoid unpleasant callers, becomes the One Ring, whose wearer can obtain absolute power, at the cost of his soul. The Hobbits also grow in the course of the story. Bilbo Baggins began as little more than baggage at the beginning of The Hobbit. Frodo and company are less helpless in the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring, but they still need rescuing. The Hobbits are decidedly minor members of the Company of the Ring, at least until the end of the first book. By the end of the story, they have grown great enough to stand with the wizards and warriors, yet their humbler perspective continues to be essential in bringing the story to the level of the reader.
The Lord of the Rings told from the viewpoint of Gandalf or Aragorn would be a different, and more remote story. Tolkien always disavowed any connection between the events in the Lord of the Rings and the real life events that occurred during its writing. I am not sure that I believe him. Tolkien did not consciously model the War of the Ring on World War II and Sauron was not based on Hitler, but I cannot imagine that a writer's life experiences wouldn't have great influence on his writings. In Tolkien's case, there seem to be certain themes in the Lord of the Rings that must have been based on Tolkien's own experiences in in both World Wars. One theme repeated several times in the Fellowship is that it is the small and humble who do the real work of saving the world while the great have their minds on other things.
While the elves, wizards and warriors fight desperately to save Middle Earth, it is the insignificant Hobbits whose acts of heroism save the day. The Hobbits do not want to be kings or win glory in battle. They do not really want to be the ones to save the world. All the Hobbits want to do is their part for Middle Earth and then go back to the Shire. As Sam might put it, they have a job to do. Surely, Tolkien based his Hobbits on the common British enlisted men who served under him in World War I. The generals and statesmen made great plans for reordering the world, but it was the courage of the ordinary soldiers who won the war.
There is also a deep sense of loss that pervades the Lord of the Rings. This is not so apparent in the Fellowship of the Ring, except in the chapters dealing with the elves, especially in Lothlorien. This feeling of loss, that much that is good in Middle Earth must pass away even if Sauron is defeated becomes especially poignant in The Return of the King so perhaps I should discuss it more in a review of that part of the trilogy. This feeling of loss, even in victory, must come from Tolkien's own experiences. In both world wars, Britain was victorious over German aggression, the good guys won, but after both wars Britain and the world was forever changed.
In some ways, this change was for the better, yet much that was good about the prewar world was gone forever. By the time the Lord of the Rings was published in the 's, Tolkien might well have felt like one of his Eldar, living in a world that was no longer his. The Fellowship of the Ring, then, is more than simply a fantasy, but a serious, though fun, story dealing with serious themes of plot and characterization. I am convinced that the Lord of the Rings will be one of the few books from the twentieth century still read centuries from now. I'm partially leaving a review out of spite of the dude bros who are mad at the cover. No one is making you buy a book that has a cover you don't like, and it's not like the cover is a surprise, you can see what you're getting lol.
This is the LoTR trilogy book set. It comes with the original work along with the maps. It is exactly what you'd expect. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This book well this and it's two original companions pioneered fantasy and are the reason that elves, dwarves, long journeys and so much more are tropes of modern fantasy and have just become part of fantastical world's without explanation. Truly something special. However, as mentioned, this book isn't perfect. At times the pacing can be very slow, there's also a LOT of text that is purely long text of the travelling they're doing and the land around them. If the land were fantastical and there were much to see during all of these, it would make sense, but often it is simply written to emphasise the length of their journey. As a result, it can drag and can sometimes take a little rereading. However I cannot knock this book down for that as it is part of what gives the book its feel. It is supposed to feel like a long journey for naive hobbits travelling much much further than they ever have before and seeing many characters, creatures and cultures they never knew even existed.
Can't wait to read the second but may have a couple days off to build up the concentration levels again. Dreary middle section. Kindle version is pages plus Maps. A Prologue describes Hobbit characteristics and the plot of The Hobbit, the prequel to this book. I wish I had stopped at The Hobbit. An enjoyable read but bogged down in the middle section with the Hobbits on quest in the Shire repeating themselves IE feasting, telling tales of their question to others. Repetitive and confusing with many different families introduced, son of X, who is son of Y etc. The book is probably pages too long and after the dreary middle section, improves greatly in the last - pages. It is a classic so my views are very much in the minority. I will continue the series watching the films as opposed to reading the books. As a huge nerd and book lover I was very excited to read this. Unfortunately it proved to be the best in the series and was very slow. It is an interesting book and contains a lot of very interesting parts which are not included in the film.
A lovely world to dive into and I would recommend but unfortunately it was very slow and difficult to read. The Illustrations are lovely and the hardback edition is very easy to read in terms of print size. Unfortunately it arrived heavily damaged and was not well packaged. If you are going to buy any editions, I would buy these as they are lovely. An unfortunate consequence of the success of The Lord of the Rings has been that frequent resetting has engendered errors by the hundred. From all of such academic aspirations was born arguably the most imaginative and popular works ever done in English literature. The story in this novel is all about the fateful power that belonged to the One Ring. It started as a magnificent story of a great adventure that will plunge the different members of the Fellowship of the Ring into quite an amazing and perilous quest. The same quest set the stage for the ultimate clash between the different powers of evil and good. You will find the excellent plot of this book moving quite faster which will please the listeners.
