QB online banking can work beyond three years, if you read this review. Verified Purchase. My review is not about the product but about its maker, Intuit. If you have been hijacked by this company to upgrade every three years then proceed to read, otherwise this review is not for you May be in three years, come and read. I have owned at least five versions of QuickBooks since last 12 years. I use online banking feature of QB extensively. It helps me eliminate re-entering the transactions manually, because the transactions get downloaded directly from the bank. Every third year of service of the software, I started receiving notifications that my version's online banking would stop working as of such and such date. I questioned that every time because downloading transactions from the bank is something between your computer and the bank.
The only reason this contract would break if the bank changes its file format etc. Most of the time the banks would not do so. Even if they did, they would make enough amends to keep it backward compatible. So, a lot of times just to test Intuit's threat, I did not upgrade the software. Sure enough, the online banking stopped working on the promised date. I am currently using QB a verified Amazon purchase. This time, I did something different. I stopped installing QB updates. I suspect that they plant a bomb, some kind of code in the software, which makes the online banking disabled as of promised date. Guess what folks, I was right. Today, June 8th, , my online banking download is alive. I am sending a letter to the attorney general of California for such practice. I can see a lot of reason for a company to force you to upgrade the software.

The software is ok but the company is another story. Intuit adds annoying 'features' at will, making the software almost unusable for the small business customer, and nothing - NOTHING - that customers say will get them to listen to how unusable the change make the software. Case in point: a recent upgrade made it MANDATORY to log into each company file every time it is open, and the password has to be changed every 90 days and has to meet Intuit's formula for a strong password. This log-in is inaccessible to LastPass, my password manager. I really, really, do not like it - but it turns out that some people have multiple company files which they switch between, and tracking the passwords of each is next to impossible.
So, of course, visible cheat sheets have to be used, and WOW does that make the software insecure! Intuit's customer forums are full of complaints, but the company turns a deaf ear. This is not an isolated case. As a company, Intuit has developed quite a reputation for not listening to customer problems and not providing useful customer support - all you have to do is look and the many times customers have used to Amazon reviews to express their outrage since there do not seem to be any other options. The thing about accounting software is that once you committed a lot of data to a particular program, changing to a competing program can be a very big problem, so you become trapped into living with whatever bad changes the vendor makes.
Bottom line, If you are not tied to QuickBooks with legacy data, like I am, I would recommend that you entrust your business accounting to some other vendor. Be very wary of this product. This is not an accounting program. It's an instrument of torture. Every "improvement" or update imposed on the user results in HOURS of I. trouble and searches for workarounds. The newest version requires constantly changing, complex passwords for each company one opens on QB. If you are a bookkeeping or accounting professional, you will be engaged in time-consuming password management--simply because QB forces it. Sharing files with clients or CPAs will be ridiculously and needlessly complex. No competent professional these days hasn't already addressed security issues internally: but QB has taken it upon themselves to force really onerous procedures on its client base. Can there really be no way to turn this off in future editions or updates?
And changing between companies is an exercise in terrible frustration: either one "doesn't have security permissions to delete a file" which nobody is TRYING TO DO--just change between files! or there's an error code that doesn't even come up when it's plugged in to any search engine. It now takes up to 5 attempts to ignore 2 separate error messages to switch to a different QB company file. Because of the password protocol changes hidden like a Trojan Horse in the recent product upgrade I'm now frightened to download any of Intuit's suggested file doctors and fixes.
I can't trust them anymore not to make it all worse. How can I proceed with confidential client issues when I can't stay on top of what Intuit is doing to its client base? Intuit's program has now gotten so intrusive because of its connection to the internet that it creates its own problems. There are no material accounting or bookkeeping enhancements or improvements from prior versions--but running a payroll program through QB not only forces product upgrades, it also forces changes on the way all users run their own businesses. To be treated this way as a loyal QB user is preposterous. Has anybody found a workable alternative?
